What Technologies are Used in Pressure Sensor Design?

There are a number of different technologies that can be used in pressure sensor design. And it will be no surprise to learn that most manufacturers claim that their own designs are the best. However, regardless of the sensor technology, the basic measuring principles are more or less the same.

    Pressure sensor designs

    • Strain gauges
    • Bourdon tubes (potentiometric)
    • Manometers
    • Capacitive devices
    • LVDT sensors (transformer principle)
    • Piezoresistive sensors
    • Crystal sensors
    • Hall effect sensors

Many of these designs have their own particular benefits, offering features that can be particularly useful in various different applications. It very much depends on what type of sensor you are looking for and whether high precision or low cost is the overriding criterion.

When choosing a sensor, especially for production, it is important to look beyond the sensor specification, to check out the supplier or manufacturer and obtain reports on reliability, production failures, production quantities etc. This will greatly reduce the chances of nasty surprises lurking round the corner.

Some technologies are better suited to some applications than others. It all depends on the exact requirements.
